Series 2A Heater Motor
Series 2A Heater Motor
Hi, I am rebuilding my Lightweight and need to replace the motor. Its a 12V system and the Series 2 Standard Heater motor looks similar from Craddocks. Has anyone got any experience of this? Many thanks John
Re: Series 2A Heater Motor
Hi,
These motors are very easily repaired and you can save yourself a lot of money by stripping it down and cleaning up, again as said on another post tonight, brushes are the usual problem unless there is significant internal corrosion (unusual unless exposed to the elements) and of course how about first checking the electrical supply? switch and all the rest. Lots to check before you spend your dollar.
Regards,
Bob

Re: Series 2A Heater Motor
Hi John,
Welcome to the forum. For not much more than the cost of the motor from Craddocks, you could get a genuine 12v Lightweight one from PA Blanchard's if your original is non repairable.

Re: Series 2A Heater Motor
Can anybody explain what differences (if any) there were between the flat heater fitted to cvilin models and ones fitted to Lightweights? Also was there a difference between S2A and S3 units? My LWT is a December 1968 build and as it was one pretty much one of the first contracts (WV7478), I'm assuming that it was not originally supplied with a heater and that the flat heater in it was in all likelihood fitted after disposal. My heater was badly rusted up (as per the image) so I just rebuilt it into another casing I got on eBay. All the parts were compatible - hence wondering what the differences may be.

Re: Series 2A Heater Motor
Except the 24 volt thing, where applicable, no difference, exactly the same I've got one of each.
The lightweight needs that bit of angled aluminium above it to give it something to bolt on to at the top. the S2A has the really useful little shelf thing which the heater sits under and bolts straight onto.
I believe the flat heater came out on the S2A when they also moved to a single wiper motor mounted in the corner, driving both wipers, which I think was around '68-ish.
I stand to be corrected but I think all lightweights got the flat heater as standard.

Re: Series 2A Heater Motor
I'm unsure of timeline/Contact Numbers, but the first Lightweights weren't fitted with heaters IIRC. There is a Modification Instruction, EMER Q 027/4 No.4 for the Fitting of commercial heater/demister on contract WV8679 (only) and vehicles used in NW Europe., shown in the back of MJC's book. So, A guess would be that prior to WV9753 no heaters were fitted on production.
I haven't been able to find an copy of the modification instruction online, so I think the only likely place to find a copy is the REME Museum, or Clives loft. (Hiya Clive!
)
(Oh how I wish I had stolen/made a copy of this kind of information when it was available to me in my younger years.
)
How many heaters were retrofitted in service, and how many after, would probably be in the land of pure guesswork by now.

Re: Series 2A Heater Motor
Hi Bob, many thanks for your reply, I did as you said and cleaned up the armature and Comm and it seems to work fine although the grub screw securing the fan was very tight.
thanks again
John
