dor alignment

Post by ianmaiden » Tue May 26, 2020 4:52 pm

Hi Guys, hope your all well. I hope you can help me as its rather frustrating, I removed my bulkhead years ago and with time free Ive been putting it back together but I cannot line the doors up.

I have pulled the bulkhead as far forward as possible but only using the upright that is attached to the front of the footwell with the 3 screws attaching it to the chassis.I had the door opening and shutting like a Bently until I placed the door top on, and it hits the windscreen. Ive tried moving hinges also
Any Ideas will be appreciated .
If I may ask another question sometime ago someone posted a link for some substitute windscreen rubbers and door rubbers but I seem to have problems finding the link to the website, If some one could add the link again that will also be a great help.
Thanks in advance

My answer may not help you much…

I have the same concerns of alignment and squaring of the right door. The tie rod (round metal rod fixed behind the grab handle to the dashboard) which connects the engine bulkhead (parts 27-28-29 on the attached diagram) has an important role. It allows the perpendicular re-squaring of the partition and therefore the correct position of the door.

Also note:
- My LWT is an LHD version, so you must reverse these indications for an RHD
- It is necessary to loosen all the fixings (ring of the steering column, brackets to the chassis, etc.) in order to have maximum play everywhere to adjust the position of the doors.

Other members will surely be more precise or complete.

if it is hitting the windscreen, is it possible the screen is lying at slightly the wrong angle?

If that is the cause - with a rebuild it is easy to have the windscreen rake too great as it droops without everything else in place - remember there are adjusters on the windscreen securing brackets which also give you a bit of play. I had the same problem when I was finishing my rebuild - I also found that, with the windscreen at the correct angle, the seal between the windscreen and the vent panel was too thin and left a gap. I ended up buying a thicker sealing strip which solved the problem. At least, I think it did - I have not driven it in the rain since so I may be wrong!

I have just done this, loosen everything off as Looloo says and tighten up the tie rod until you are happy. I had to tighten mine up alot and there was some horrible creaking from the bulkhead. Once you have done that tighten up the steering column/bulkhead supports. Don't forget that the hinges also have some adjustment up and down / front and back, so make sure the front edge of the door is parallel to the bulkhead before you start, then you just have to worry about the height and the rear gap being parallel to the rear tub.

This is the only job I really hate about rebuilding a Landy and I put it off for weeks (months?). If you look at my thread you will see I am still worrying about the door tops!
