You're really making some great progress...now this advice may well be too little too late.
Like you I wanted to get the gearbox mounted, which seemed like a good idea at the time, that was until I tried to fit the engine! I painted the air blue trying not to damage the fresh paint work on the engine and chassis, whilst trying to lower the engine into the engine bay and get it to line up with the gearbox. In the end I found it much easier to pull the gearbox, mount the two together then install them together. Hope that helps...keep up the great work.

Advice appreciated but you're right it is a little late! I had already fitted the engine and came to the same conclusion to you, next time I will fit them as a single unit...

First i fitted the slave cylinder to the bell housing, what a faff the small split pins are to get in..much swearing and an hour later I was done.

So I thought i was just going to drop the gearbox in and bolt it to the engine? My engine hoist had different ideas. Under load the jib wouldn't raise more than 50 cm off the ground, without load it went to the ceiling! Obviously the seals are on their way out. Having messed around with it for more than an hour I managed to lift the gearbox high enough to get it over the chassis. I then discovered the chains weren't holding the gearbox level, so out it came. Yep, having levelled the gearbox it took me another hour to get it high enough so I could have another go. This time it went in but probably took me another couple of hours to get it mated to the engine.

Last challenge was finding the four wheel drive selector rod which seemed to have disappeared - I gave up and removed one from a spare gearbox that i have that will soon be going on eBay (will be of no interest to anyone on here as it is a 1964 IIa box).

I managed 1 hour tonight and fitted the front prop shaft. I had a look at fitting the handbrake linkage and discovered I seem to have mislaid some more bits....back to the spare gearbox sitting on the garage floor to salvage some more bits, by the time it gets to ebay there will be nothing left of it.

Its been over a month since I have had time in the garage. I managed to move my spare gearbox out of the way, it has been sat in the middle of the garage for 2 years and getting in the way now that the rear tub isn't covering it up! I connected up the handbrake linkage and fitted a drain plug to the petrol tank that was missing one.

I don't generally bash Britpart, there are good parts and not so good parts, but their customer service is appalling. When I discovered the missing drain plug i thought it would be easier to contact Britpart customer services direct....the response was that they didn't deal direct with the public and just gave me a list of retailers - they didn't even give me a part number, never mind sending me a drain plug - I expected a bit more help when you have bought £400+ of their parts.

And I think you were entitled to a bit more help than that as well. What a shame.

I do wonder about that every time I read LRO
"Brought to you by our great super smashing sponsors Britpart. Who are incidentally marvellous as they pay us to tell you that. Did we mention how great Britpart are?".

With me working from home and it being lighter in the evenings, I am going to try and do a little work on the Land Rover every night now. So on Sunday I thought I would quickly fit the last part of the exhaust system, the down-pipe I had kept in the loft for 10+ years. I struggled for over 3 hours and failed – it was about 5-10cm too far forward at the manifold. Whilst it looked like the right part, I couldn’t remember where I had got it from. So it was either the engine and gearbox being in the wrong place, or the wrong part. Hoping it was the exhaust, I ordered a new one on eBay which arrived today. Whilst it is almost identical to the one from the loft, it is a 10cm shorter and to show I don't hold grudges it is Britpart!

I was writing this and then thought “why I am writing this rather than fitting the new exhaust ?”……….20 minutes later……seems it is a lot quicker to fit the right part!

Anyone have any ideas what the one from the loft would fit ?

Hello,

Sorry, I can't help you find out which model this tube fits.
By cons, know that I bought a complete line in stainless steel (overpriced of course) and in a brand of good reputation. Well, it's very, very approximate as correspondence; I'm going to drink it for a while to mount it correctly.

If it can help you: https://www.carbuilder.com/uk/stainless-steel-bends

Good road

Must be nice and shiny! I thought about stainless steel but already have a few bits of the exhaust (one of which was wrong!)
