Thanks for that, Bob and LLLM, but, were the ATUs or TUAAMs wing-mounted? This isn't my area of expertise, by any means, but I cannot recall coming across such a fit on a GS vehicle. But, then, the units I was in were mostly all FFR-equipped, apart from the odd runabout, until much later when I was in units with no radios at all.

To answer A's point - the number of ATUs or TUAAMs would depend on the number of VHF radios fitted - each would have its own. Most FFR vehicles were command vehicles (of some sort) so, except at the lowest level, would have both forward and rear links. For example, a company commander would have a radio over which he commanded his company and a second radio over which he would receive orders from his battalion/regimental commanding officer, who, inturn, would have another radio on the brigade command net and so on up the chain. Apart from the security issues, two radios would be used to prevent excessive traffic over a single net - and, of course, a higher commander wouldn't want to be listening to his various subordinates giving their orders etc over his net, which he would want to keep clear for his own use - sending orders and advising and responding to his immediate subordinates.

Yes sorry I see Bob is right, which has prompted a dig into AC No.12123, Part 2, Section 4 showing a selection of set ups for 1/2 & 3/4 Ton FFR & GS. Although there are further pages that are just for TUL & TUM FFRs. And thanks LLLM for explaining I wondered how they worked that.

Never owned any Clansman gear, although I hope after WPR to have a PRC320 for HF CW

Im guessing there should be a hole in the bottom of the box for cable entry / exit?

Did they have a headset / mic for the driver / passenger or use the separate speaker, I have seen mounted to the frame? Is there an interface box in the cab to facilitate this connection?

I am trying to replicate a fairly simple clansman but not complete FFR setup. I have seen several - that you think really - "all that kit???" sureley not (well I do!!) - I dont like over dressed up... just realistic in service

This box is/was one of two cable stowage wing mounted boxes positioned back from the TUAAM stations and is part of the Clansman installation kit supplied to retro fit Clansman into the earlier Larkspur configured FFR's (basically any FFR built pre '79) and was not part of the GS install kit. The GS cable box of which there is only one, is smaller and has a hinged flap secured with turnbuckle screws plus cutout in the back into which the harness cable secures.

Thank you so much for all the info, all of you, maybe it wasnt as such a silly question as i first thought, iits definately got the little grey cells pusating!
I will definately look into those publications, there looks to be some interesting and pertinant reading there.

The actual operational insight (for somebody out of the op loop) is a fascinating, and logical once explained insight, so many thanks.

on the note of the cable boxes, I will try and find some pictures for clarification.

so this is the other one i've seen, but im confused, easy i know, - where is this mounted and surely the braided cable is totally exposed, how does it mount, and is it an optical illusion that the lid has no cable exit when closed.? in a similar way to the wingtop flaps? Im guessing they are not expected to be water tight?

That's the right bit of kit.
Goes on top of the wing, flap to rear. Used to stow the cables when not in use.
I've got one somewhere but not for sale.
