Lightweight Chassis Numbers 2A Rover 1

Post by diffwhine » Sat Apr 01, 2023 12:02 pm

Anybody got a copy of Mark Cook's excellent book on Lightweights to hand? My one is in storage due to a house move.

I'm aware that early RHD Rover 1s had a 236 prefix chassis number (as does my 1968 GS model). I think the LHD ones started with 239.

Would anybody be able to check their copy of Mark's book for me and tell me if there were any other chassis number series for early production and pre-production test vehicles?

There can't be much built before my one in December 1968, but I'm trying to confirm the authenticity of one that has cropped up with an odd chassis number.

Many thanks.

Here's a pic of the page you are after, showing the Pre-production chassis numbers.

Thank you Neil. Thats a huge help.
There is a "Rover 1" being sold as an unfinished project. Its up for £15,000 which in itself is eye-watering, but even more so when you start to ask questions.
According to the seller, it was built in October 1967 and has a 241 prefix chassis number. Unless this is some Holy Grail prototype built on a civilian chassis, its potentially a "wrong 'un".

The owner has clearly spent a fortune on it to get it to the state it is now, but I have a horrible feeling it isn't what it thinks it is.

It caught my eye, because I am mulling over selling my one as a complete rolling chassis with rebuilt axles, overhauled brakes, transmission, engine etc. As mine is in a similar condition (but has the original chassis), the advert caught my eye.

Anyway - the idea of selling mine has been shelved. After all the work I've done to it, I intend to have at least some fun out of driving it before I sell it.

No problem to post up the pic mate.

I guess the vehicle in question is the one in Kings Lynn and advertised on a well known auction site?

That would be the one!
Looks like a cracking job though - just a shame it appears to not be what it should be.

That said - it does look like 241 was a pre-production number looking at the page from Mark Cook's book but the last four digits are not what is showing there.

I think asking £15,000 as is, is asking a bit much. The seller did say that he's not a particular LR buff, so may be pleading ignorance or he could have paid a fortune to others to get it to this stage. One of his pictures is an underseat civilian fuel tank. Not sure how he intends to get that to fit, but does raise questions about how correct the rest of the build may be.

I noticed the civilian tank, along with a few SIII looking items. Wings, radiator, servo brakes, fuel tap location, gearbox etc....

What has been done looks to be done well, But, a replacement galvanized chassis with an alleged 241 number, is just a replacement chassis with an alleged 241 number. The original chassis with that number could have been sat under a standard IIA 88". I would be asking for a lot of back up evidence in the form of original photos, showing the original vehicle, it's original chassis, (And it's number), before I parted with a large lump of cash. A Data Plate would be nice to see too.

I would love a IIA Lightweight, but I think this isn't the one for me.

It may be one of the pre-production units, but I can't see that chassis number in the photo of Mark's book you posted unless you can see it elsewhere. I've asked him if it has a contract plate. That would help. No mention of any historic photos - probably one done best face to face.

Correct - for that sort of money, it really needs to have full providence, but if it is a prototype, then it is a rarity in number only really. I reckon most of the prototype / preproduction stuff (if that's what it is) is now lost. I also spotted a Series 3 rear tub...

No mention in the book of any other 241 chassis numbers. Just reference to the first prototype in 1965, with no further information. And, another early prototype VRN 20BT90, with no reference to it's chassis number.

00SP16 is alive and well, living in Italy.

Yes, saw that one as well!

The more you look the more Series 3 bits appears. Gearbox bell housing I think, hazard warning light switch. . .

Ah. If it's moved on then I'm happy to be corrected. It was a long time ago that it was reported as being there. Good to hear it is still out there though.
