Another not so newbie

Post by brinv8 » Fri Jul 09, 2010 8:48 am

Hi all,
Like it says, another not so newbie, located in Kent, and been into Landy's for ever, owned and used loads of them, currently have a 101 Radio Body 12v; Discovery 4 and more recently a 24v FRR LWT 56FL65. Not my first LWT mind, have had one before, which I kept and used for about 8years. Sold it due to too many other toys, and regretted it ever since. Took that lightweight everwhere, even went to Poland in it, three days 1100 miles to get there, over 900 miles in and around, on & off road when there in 7 days, and then another three days 1200miles to get home. The new LWT does need some work, but not insurmountable, so be prepared for some silly questions. Have added photo of the vehicle, so all can see, good news is that it is more or less complete, if a little shabby.
Also have some of the military history of 56FL65 which served with 1 & 2 Para from 1973 till 1987, and waiting for more info.

Brian.

;) Hi and welcome. it looks like you have your work cut-out in restoring your landy. will you try to get it back to its original condition or will you make it more user friendly and comfortable ?. are the indicators supposed to be beneath the sidelights or above them? I noticed that the LWT is on a Q plate, have you any idea of its original year ? Good luck, and keep us posted , Alan.

Hi mate, and welcome to the forum, take no notice of them and their indicator/sidelight nonsense. Sometimes I think I'm the only one sense round here
Anything you need to know, just ask, chances are someone will be able to help.
You don't know any girls called Poly do you :)

Hi Brian,

Welcome to the forum and it's great to see you here. Please feel free to give any feedback on the site/forum as it's all quite new and we want to make it as good an experience as we can for everyone.

I don't know if you have a copy of Mark Cook's LWT Bible, but it shows 56FL65 as Army Contract No WV10775 with a date into service of 72/73 so that matches up with your dates/history and there is a chance that it may be tax exempt?

The picture looks so different from the others on the 101 Forum where it is in the long grass and part covered.

As the others have already said, feel free to ask anything and we will all be glad to help wherever we can.

Are you going to War & Peace by any chance?

Best regards,

Gordon & Val

Hi guys, and thanks for the warm welcome.

Alan; It's going to be restored back to original spec, confirmed as built in Jan 1973, still awaiting confirmation. The indicators are in the right location, as built. It's going to be one of a pair of Radio trucks, "BIg Bruv" & "Little Sis" that's a 101 Radio Body and LWT. As both served with 1 Para during their service life. Been in contact with a ex-RSM 1 Para, who is trying to sort out some additional info.

Chaos; That's my fault, trying to clean the algee and insect life out of the engine bay, and not clearing up afterwards, Under the cardboard are the signatures for the 101 and daughters 90,. ho hum. The yellow overspray is from the daughters 90, on the freshly painted garage floor. Plenty of time for oil and grease markings later.

Indi; Know exactly what you mean. But don't know of any Poly's, should I???

Gordon & Val: Not heard of Mark Cook's "Bible" but very interested to see it.
It's been confirmed the it was built in Jan 1973, actual date unknown , as yet, will know soon.
Yes; looks totally different from the "as found photos" might well post those photos here as well.
No; I'm not going to War & Peace, even though it's less than 30miles away, too much like a busy weekend for me.

Cam3r0n: Found it in the middle of a field of nettles and weeds, not more than 1.5 miles from my house, the PO had been trying to sell it for three years, only had one other person interested, but they never returned. He was shocked when I turned up to collect it, on time and with all the gear to recover it and tow it home. So much so, that he cleared out one of his container stores of all the series 3 spares and tools he had and included them with the sale.

Landymad: Definatly a "PROJECT" - but is all there, except for a couple of silly parts, like air filter/support and bonnet catch.

Been invited back to the farm, to look around the barns and stores to see if we can find any more parts, he thinks there should be more.

Also been playing, and she turns over, not started yet, as petrol is off, but the lights work, the Clutch works and has brake peddle pressure, but needs fluid.

So far so good.

It always amazes me how little it seems to require to get a Land Rover moving under it's own steam no natter how long it's been left.

A jet wash will do wonders I bet.

Copied from Dean's post on the Lightweight Owners Club Webby,

Having my finger firmly on the pulse, I have today been contacted by the publishers of Mark Cook's Lightweight Land Rover book - they are printing new copies and flogging them.

Anyone wanting a copy for £27 inc postage can contact Rebecca at Veleu*%$$£ (didn't quite get that bit) Publishing on 01305 260068.

The cheap offers you generally see on the internet are generally not available - in my experience, they take the order and then sit on it, because the book was out of print.

No need to thank me for this hot news. No, really. I know you're all gagging to get a copy.

Dean.
