Thanks guys for your kind comments,
Further on, when I cleaned up the n/s hub I discovered this.....,
NS hub outer bearing Dec 20.JPG
NS hub outer bearing Dec 20.JPG (139.94 KiB) Viewed 1734 times
As you can see there's a chip of metal from the lip of the hub casing jammed down the back of the bearing runner and a score in the casing running directly down to it.
Also the bearing was damaged....,
NS outer bearing damage_Dec 20.JPG

Not sure what has caused this, it's must have been like it for the last 10 years as I've never had the hubs off since I've owned the vehicle.
The rollers seem ok and still run free in the damaged area.
Having removed the bearing runner you can clearly see the chip out of the casing lip....,

I was very concerned the hub casing had cracked but close inspection reveals not.
New bearing from PAB ordered but unfortunately this has delayed finishing the project I had hoped to complete before the Christmas break ends.

Bob

Well with the front wheel bearings and brakes sorted its time to move onto other things, the first of which you can see from the pic below;

As you can see, at one time there had been a plate fixed to the block, not uncommon but unfortunately at some stage in the engines life it was removed, probably when it was last reconned back in '95. Such plates were (are) affixed by hammer u drives and in this instance probably the heads have been chopped to remove the plate leaving the stubs in the block. Not normally a problem but as you can see, there's an oil weep from the top right stub. So what are my options?
I'm thinking maybe knock the stub through if it will into the block oil way and seal the hole with a new u drive. If I do that, were will the drive stub end up? directly to the sump? I think that's doable but I'd have to remove the oil filter mounting to get at it proper.
The other option is try to seal it as it is but with what?
Third is leave it as its been like it for a long while and mop up the oil now and again. I'm not sure though that its not getting worse and I don't like leaving problems unfixed as it will grate on me forever.
So what do you reckon?
The other issue is the water pump which is on it's way out with about a mil or more noticeable movement in the fan although it doesn't appear to wobble when the engines running nor is there a coolant leak - yet. I've never had to change one before so a heads up on any traps or pitfalls of the job to watch out for would be appreciated.
Regards
Bob

Hiya Bob! :D ,

If you don't fancy hammering the stub through the block, you could drill out the remnants of the rivet, which should leave the minimum possible swarf/particles getting into the sump/oil, and then hammer home a new one. Or, you could drill the rivet out to depth of say 2mm, and after a damn good clean to remove any oil residue, slap some Belzona in, and over, the hole to seal it. IIRC Belzona Super Metal, or E Metal, was meant to be good for repairing engine blocks. We had it in our Battle Damage Repair kits, I remember playing with the 1221 and it's good stuff.

https://www.belzona.co.uk/en/products/p ... epair.aspx

The only bolts on the waterpump that are likely to give a problem are the three long ones that go through the timing case and into the block itself, but normally they come out okay on a 2 1/4. Well, on the few I've done they've come out okay. On the later diesel lumps they do like to snap off every now and then.

Hiya Neil :D
Cheers mate, very much appreciated.
I'll sort the water pump first then the block, as it needs an oil change. I'm not sure the rivet will drill well as I think they are normally of hardened steel. Not heard of the Belzona stuff before but 1221 is readily available on gleebay. If anything I'm erring in favour of hammering it through the block but come the day.....
Best,
Bob
