19HF27

Post by Bob Fell » Tue Oct 15, 2019 7:57 pm

Thought I'd start my own vehicle thread... why I haven't done so before now God alone knows.
Anyway, its been a bit quiet on here so here are a few pics on the progress of replacing the rear hub oil seals.
At the weekend stripped down the rear o/s hub and removed the seal carrier, all went well....

The old carrier was well knackered..

New one (from Blanchard's) fitted, went on a treat with some gentle tapping with an aluminum drift..

Pics are a bit iffy, its my crap phone, forgot to take the camera with me.
Update to follow after this weekend, progress is slow as only get a couple of hours each day but well pleased so far how easy it's been.
Cheers
Bob

Hi Bob,
Really good idea - it would be nice if we all had threads of our own lightweights to update as things happen: and yours will be something of a master class!

Hiya Bob! :D ,

Good to see that the old distance piece came off, and the new one went on without any dramas mate. 8-)

It's a constant battle to keep the oil in these motors. LR have been trying since the forties and haven't managed to make an oil tight one yet. I had to change the front diff seal on the daily driver again yesterday, and I'm trying to ignore the oil leak from the transfer box as it's box off and strip to fix it. Oh well, at least the leaking rear crank seal has fixed itself.

Keep up the good fight.

Hi Fred and Neil,
Thank you for your input guys :D
Never got time to do anything of consequence last week but here's today's latest installment;
O/S rear hub cleaned out, shells and bearings inspected, all found ok and greased..

Inner race fitted, Timken, outer is SKS..

002.JPG (2.06 MiB) Viewed 10613 times
New seal fitted, having bought both types decided to go with leather as it is a much tighter fit, I've had it soaking in grease for 2 weeks and had to be careful to ensure flush fit to hub casing or it fouls the bearing race..

Hello Hello,

Bravo Bob, nice work in the rules of the art; bearing settings, etc.
It reminds me of the hardships of rebuilding the front axle.

Do you know what is said in France Land Rover?
"It's a car where you spend time to stop the water from getting in and the oil out" ...

Best regards

Thanks Looloo,
If you've got the kit, use it and do it properly is my motto.
And yes, stopping water getting in and oil getting out, that sums it up a treat

Now comes a leading question because I cannot find the answer and unfortunately the pic does not really show what follows, excepting for the lower bolt where you can just see it.
Here is the drive fitted, I'm using the original drive end bolts and spring washes as I believe in keeping original as is..
010.jpg
010.jpg (2.32 MiB) Viewed 10542 times
But, on my vehicle there is a thin plain washer fitted up against the end cap with the spring sandwiched between it and the drive bolt head. Here it is below, I cannot find reference to it anywhere, is it a PO thing or original spec, pre 1980? They have definitely been there a long while and some are missing hence the question..

ID is 3/8" obviously.
OD is 9/16"
Thickness is about 1/16"
Anyone has the same....... :?: :?:
The usual suspects have thrown up a blank and the parts book does not list it.

I didn't have them, but, there is a possibility I was thinking of. One of the problems with the driving members is that they leak. And, of course, the threaded holes for the retaining bolts are blind. Over time they get filled with hardened grease. It could be that a previous user put washers under the bolts to increase the pressure on the gasket as the bolts weren't going fully home, so causing a bit of a leak. A couple of my bolts were actually shortened - perhaps an alternative "solution" to make the driving member oil-proof against the washer. I took some pains to completely clean out my holes which were indeed full of hardened grease in the bottoms.

Just an idea. By the way, thanks for the pictures of your maintenance - really interesting.
