Plastic Series 3 wiper motor covers

I brought this up on another thread where, actually, it shouldn't have been. It got no response, but, it seems to me that there are loads of Series 3 plastic wiper motor covers around; mine, Rod's and this one on eBay, which have a pair of small bolt holes on the lower edge of the front face. Can anyone tell me what they were for? I have seen lots in pictures, but never a picture which shows them in use. Pyephone mike?

On the second picture in the link, it looks like a washer bottle motor attached to the rear?

My phone only has a small screen so difficult to make out.

I just checked one of my two covers and the one that I found doesn't have the two holes. The other one has buried itself in the workshop somewhere..


Aha ! There you go.. There doesn't seem to be holes in either of them, but I cannot say where they came from..

It would seem a crap (but obvious?) place to locate the washer motor.. Wouldn't it piss water all over your passenger leg if the pipes leaked?

I am sure that the vast majority were not drilled, but it seems there are enough about which were to suggest there was common purpose. It's just that I don't know what that was! Mine, a GS, belonged to two TA pushes in London, one of which was R Signals, so it is possible it had a Pyephone or something and the holes supported the bracket for the mike. But, I am only guessing.

I've got a Pye Pocketfone somewhere so i'll have a look at the mic, when i next see it, to see if it has a clip on the rear

Just googled a pic and yes, it has a spring loaded clip on the rear.

If it was for that, i wonder where they mounted the radio?

The cover on gleebay is fitted with a washer pump that I believe was used as a booster for the washers.
On the mid and late vehicles with the pump next to the washer bottle, the screen wash has a long way to go and even with the in-line non-return valve located just before the T split, washer performance to the o/s jet can initially at least, be poor until the pump brings up the pressure, indeed when travelling at any speed washer performance is not brilliant so for me this was a unit mod fix to the problem. I can find no official reference to the additional pump but the logic works for me. On early S111 vehicles it wasn't a problem as the wash had a very short distance to go with the o/s cab mounted bottle.

There may be an EMER for this mod, Clive?

That's my take on it.

That's interesting. I hadn't considered a fitting for an additional washer pump. I hadn't got one on mine, but I wouldn't be certain that it was the original wiper cover for the vehicle anyway. I wondered whether it was for a Pyephone, because I had something similar in one of my vehicles which had a small plate with a V cut in it which took a button on the back of the microphone - it was actually for a built-in loudhailer, rather than a radio, but the fixing was similar. I think, though, that the washer motor sounds likely, particularly given the number I have seen with the two holes.
