hybrid oil/temp/fuel gauge?

Post by Megaweasel » Sat Jul 20, 2024 2:53 pm

hello all. Just got my water temp. gauge working again on my '78 12 volt lightweight and feeling pretty pleased with myself - sender unit was U/S after a resistance check so replaced it and after reconnecting the cable which had been removed from the back of the gauge, it burst into life. Flushed with success I thought I'd repeat the process with the oil temp gauge which also wasn't working. However, looking at it, it looks to me like it's a capillary one? It has no spade connectors and a stiff 'cable' on it.

Pic shows a suspiciously clean housing for the electrical water gauge compared to the fuel and oil gauge housings. Coupled with the garish yellow cable that runs to the sensor, I'm wondering if someone has adapted a capillary gauge to have an electric water temp gauge? If that is the case, its it easy to do so I could do the same for the oil gauge? Where could I get the gauge or what would I need to canablize and what/where would I need to do for the sender? I think the electrical sender is the same as the water one but its down in the depths in the sump I believe?

Gauge is the fuel on the right/oil on the bottom one

Hi Chris,

I think that you may have a problem finding an electrical oil temperature guage of that orientaion to suit the cluster as I don't believe Land Rover did one. The later all electrical clusters had the positions of the oil and fuel guages reversed and went from displaying temperatures in figures to just displaying C-N-H. I may be wrong, and there may be one available, or one for another application that fits that Jaeger combined cluster, but I'm not aware of an electrical one to match what you have.

thanks - good to know. I'll have a bit of a poke about and see what I can find. Water temp was prob. more important to me than oil temp in reality..
