What is 335794 for?

Post by weetchus » Mon Feb 26, 2024 11:51 am

Hi all. It's been a while since I've posted. Hi everyone. Happy New Year to you all. Hi Neil, Hi LooLoo, Clive and all the regulars.

I've been making a spare tyre tie down strap and can't seem to work out why a strap is used when the big centre U Shaped bracket 335794 looks perfectly suitable for some form of attachment / clamp / cross bar.

What is it's actual purpose?

Thanks all.
Alex

Hi,

Maybe a strap breaks down less often or doesn't require any tools to remove the spare wheel...?

If you choose a strap:
- Pay attention to its useful length depending on the dimensions of your tire
- An original strap appears to be gray-blue

Beautiful weather at home…?

Hi Alex,

The staple stops the spare wheel sliding around on the bonnet, the strap stops it bouncing off the bonnet.

There are several different types of bonnet mounting arrangements used on Land Rovers over the years, this is the one on the Military 109 SIII if my memory serves me correctly.

The holes in the spike, or dowel, are so a padlock can be fitted. The vehicle still uses the strap as well.

Hi LooLoo and Neil.
Thanks as always.
Yes, LooLoo, the weather is as it always is here... about 28 degrees C, a light breeze and sunny. The main perk of living in paradise.
Neil, I like the "spike" dowel bonnet mount. I wish I had welded one on before painting... I suppose I could modify mine. If I did this I'd probably get some aluminium sheet and cut a 16" circle lid to go on top of the wheel hub. Maybe with some sort of seal on the edge to stop water ingress. Then on top of the spike I could add a threaded section for a wingnut to tighten down and hold the lid.
The wheel could then store some extra rope etc.
Just some thoughts.
