Right I see. In which case, mine had a galv chassis when I bought it. So we just removed any loose paint and dirt and degreased etc. If you start going at it with anything abrasive you risk going through the galv.....I'd go gently.

Sometimes the bell housing can be a bit reluctant to separate from the flywheel housing, mine was, and needed a screwdriver gently tapping between the two to persuade them to part company.

Have you changed the coil orientation? In earlier pictures it appears to be mounted correctly, in that neither of the two drain holes in the coil cap are visible meaning that they must be pointing downwards, which is correct.

Strangely the coil earth polarity adhesive label invariably tended to be on the underside. But I suppose that doesn't matter as it was just for a fitter to be aware of the coils polarity. But now it looks as if the that silvery label is uppermost, which I admit would seem logical, but once the coil is fitted nobody ever needs to read the label again.

In the later pics I think I can see a drain hole uppermost adjacent to the label that now is visible. The significance of this is that the short screened cable from filter box to coil can only reach to its nearest coil terminal. The result is that the HT produced gives a positive spark at the sparking plug instead of a negative spark. This will result in sub-optimal running, although I am aware that are large number of vehicles have coils fitted incorrectly even when in service.

I don't know where you are but suspect it is some distance from Llandeilo, but I would have been willing to do some basic electrical testing. There is some coverage here: https://www.militarylightweight.co.uk/r ... nd-rovers/
