24V FFR indicators do not flash
Hi, I was mad enough to export a FFR Series 3 109 LR to Kansas City - turns out even almost 40 year old Ex Military LR need a UK export license which caused some aggro. I came across this forum whilst searching for help with the indicators and I hope no one minds me asking questions about a 109.
The issue I am having is the indicators come on but do not flash. They all come on and again do not flash when the hazard switch is on. All the wires seem correct and power is feeding into the relay from the correct connection 49 with indicators and 30 for the flasher. I have fitted a new Hella flasher but no joy. Any ideas appreciated.
Thanks

working on the principal you have the right flasher unit, normally lack of flashing is caused by poor current flow, either bad earths at the lamp holders or corroded connectors on the wires, quick check is take the lenses off, try to get the flashers to work and take a wire directly from the side of the bulb to the neg side of the battery, this will check for bad earths at least.

Hello,
In the process of rebuilding my LWT for electrical purposes, I did the following:
- All connections have been deoxidized (male and female)
- All connections have been tightened (Lucas tubular or classic blade connectors)
- I added/replaced weights where I imagined them to be weak (paint stripping down to bare metal)
- All wire/cable passages have been checked, optimized or protected
One prayer and everything works.
Regards.

Re: 24V FFR indicators do not flash
It could be an earth issue with the relay, or the hazard switch.
I would start with cleaning up the relay earth to rule that out as it's easy to do. Then I would seperate the hazard switch from it's multiplug on the loom and make sure the terminals are clean and not corroded, followed by unscrewing the lens from the hazard switch and giving a blow out with an airline or a soaking with contact cleaner and leave to drain before refitting and trying again. If that doesn't work then try bypassing the hazard switch by joining the relevant terminals together at the loom multiplug to see if the indicators then work, proving the relay and circuits are okay.

Good luck.

Re: 24V FFR indicators do not flash
Thanks Everyone for your replies, very kind of you . I bought a Powerprobe and started testing and found the issue in less than a minute - Bad news my friend in the UK who charged the batteries managed to make the Series 3 a 24V positive earth. In fairness he was trying to help me.
I have the flasher and hazards working which is the good news the bad news is the alternator is not charging - Any thoughts on which part is now not working - the Alternator is a FV760740 24V big bastard -
Thanks
James

Are you sure that the generator (the big bit in the engine bay) is actually not putting out a charge? There is a section under the Reference section above that has been written by Clive Elliot which is extremely comprehensive and may help resolve any charging issue. I am not sure if the change from negative earth to positive earth is causing an issue for you.

I reckon it will be as Series FFR's are AC rectified, negative earth systems but as said, Clive is the expert and will no doubt come along to clarify.Landie68 wrote: ↑Wed Feb 23, 2022 6:36 pmAre you sure that the generator (the big bit in the engine bay) is actually not putting out a charge? Re: 24V FFR indicators do not flash
I would thoroughly recommend digging into Clive's 'All Charged Up' article. My experience is that the regulator box is rather more fragile than the generator itself, which is entirely forgivable for 50 year old electromechanical components.
I did post a while ago how to mount a commercially available 24 volt alternator. It is all fully reversible so you can go back to the big Gennie when you get it back up and running. For the price of a Chinese alternator it keeps your wagon up and running while you delve into the dark arts of military grade electromechanical generation.

Hope that helps.

Re: 24V FFR indicators do not flash
I did read somewhere that all alternators (of any type) are negative earth.
