Other news? Well, today it was taxed for the first time as a vehicle of historic interest... So, I can drive it again! (And I've already sent off for a pair of black and silver number plates!)

Excellent news Fred!

Now you will stand a fighting chance of setting the carb up and of giving it a long overdue, proper shakedown.

Wishing you many trouble free miles ahead. But best pack a few tools.....just in case. Oh and don't forget to check the wheel nuts after you have done the first few miles. Maybe after you have finished loading up cakes in town. Certainly an occasion worthy of a cake in celebration of being back on the road.

Thanks for your kind words chaps! I am indeed looking forward to giving it a good run - it needs it and so do I. Piddling with rain all day here, though. But, it did mean I was able to get on with my rear seat - which I enjoyed. And, I do have a good toolbox, complete with a good selection of nuts and bolts, a spare clip for the choke cable, some rivets, black masking tape, string....!

A red letter day, I suppose. My new black and silver number plates arrived. I painted out the silver rim and rivetted them to the Land Rover. I think they are a vast improvement. And, of course, I was able to take it for a drive. Nothing ambitious, I have a very convenient 3 mile circuit here so I did that three times while adjusting the carburettor between each trip. I must say, I am amazed at the power - it goes like stink, but, although it runs smoothly the tickover is still a bit odd - it won't idle consistently, it revs up slightly of its own volition every few seconds. I don't know why, but, the most important thing is that it is going and, when it is driving, it goes well.

Other stuff? I promised photos of the rear seat being restored. I'm very pleased with the frame, but the backrest itself isn't brilliant - but I'll live with it.

Also - I have found that the idle screw on my zenith carb was the sticky one when taking it apart for a refurb. Might be worth completely removing it, clean up with carb cleaner and giving it a blow through with an air line.

Hi Fred,
looking at your pictures I was remembered to the month of working on my Molly (what, to tell the truth, I am still doing from and to).
And it’s right: to drive our Lightys is a great pleasure too. I still have the grin on my face when I drive my Lightweight.

Unfortunately we haven’t in Germany the possibility to fix some original looking numberplates to the car, just black letters on white ground.

Thank you, Steve. It is something of a bonus that we are now allowed to put black and white/grey/silver numberplates on our historic vehicles. It is a particular benefit for owners of ex-military vehicles, of course, as the vast majority had them in service. But, not all, so all is not lost if you have to use white ones - at least, as far as the front is concerned. But, once you're in the driving seat, it really doesn't matter! And, thank you for the positive comments.

And thank you Andy. I have just ordered some vinyl dye and their cleaner and we'll see how we get on.

My only concern there is if you need to dye white over black first, as black is a difficult colour to cover. Maybe hold back some dye for a second go if this is the case?
