MOT rule changes
MOT rule changes
As I’m sure we are all aware vehicles over 40 years old from later in the month won’t need an mot
The dvla has finally told us how we are going to tax a vehicle that is now mot exempt see point 5:

Re: MOT rule changes
Interesting that the 40 years is from date of first registration not build date. Might affect some of us due to the vehicles not being registered until they left military service. Off the top of my head my dates are 1969 build / 1978 registration. I’ll be checking properly later as I may need one final MOT!

Re: MOT rule changes
Have just checked my V5 and the 'date of first registration' is 05/09/78 - my MOT expires on 16/09/18 so I just scrape in
.
I will take it to the MOT centre for a yearly check though as I would prefer the peace of mind.

Re: MOT rule changes
I called the DVLA yesterday. My vehicle is 72 so is fine. However the MOT runs out on the 17th, new rule 20th. They just said don't drive it for a few days

Re: MOT rule changes
Hi,
It says 40 years from when it was registered or manufactured.
Mine has a 1970 build date and 1981 first registration date.
Anyone know if I will be ok for no MOT or whether I'll have to get something changed with the DVLA?
That's off the .gov site.

Re: MOT rule changes
You are correct, it does say registration or date of manufacture and, regarding your question, this is also from the same source:
"What you have to do
You must apply for a vehicle tax exemption to stop paying vehicle tax. This is sometimes called putting a vehicle into the ‘historic tax class’.
You do not have to apply to stop getting an MOT for your vehicle each year. However, you must still keep it in a roadworthy condition."
Re: MOT rule changes
Bump!
Just realised that you dont get a reminder from the DVLA in any format that the tax and mot had expired when on historic. Now waiting to see if I get a letter for the one month gap ... Grrrr

Re: MOT rule changes
I've always had a reminder about my tax being due.
Just a quick note on this as I've falling foul to it when trying to get the VHI on the 1979 sand lightweight.
You cant apply for your vehicle until January 1st of its 41st year of manufacture.!
I have had to MOT and Tax mine for this year and the lightweight was 40 on April the 4th this year.

Re: MOT rule changes
I MOT'd mine for the last time? last month, it's build date being December '79.
Now, I say last time? as was having a conversation about this with my MOT man and he is of the opinion that some insurance companies, such as the specialist cherished/vintage vehicle ones will insist on the vehicle still being MOT'd to qualify for insurance. Has anyone else heard of this? I am insured with one such company and there is nothing in their small print nor have they informed me that they will require this, and I've been with them for a while now.
Regards
Bob
