61 FK 61 (S2A) - The First Rebuild

Hi,

About time I kicked off a proper project post.

My old girl is an S2A 1970 formerly FFR.
She's lost all the 24V stuff so I'll be resurrecting her as a 12V GS version.
I'm not going for show class as I'm no Rivet counter.
She'll be coming to life in a modified state (knobbly tyres, bucket seats etc) for me to have some fun offroad.
Everything that is modified for fun now will be done sympathetically to allow return to standard later.

I'm away to take some photos whilst the sun is shining.

I'll edit this adding some general pics for reference once I sort out my Flickr account.

List of upcoming work:-

1. Carb (Zenith) rebuild and refit.
2. Engine tuning.
3. Strip and rebuild / refinish of all ancillaries.
4. Strip and paint engine. After leak reduction.
5. Strip and paint engine bay.
6. Autosparks wiring harness to fit. Just ordered it. 8ish weeks lead time so better get moving on the pre work.
7. Hardtop and tub removal to verify chassis condition and run rear harness. Full tilt and sticks available too.
8. Strip and refinish rear axle and fix diff leak.
9. Bulkhead and vent panel repairs and refinish prior to harness installation.

And no doubt a whole heap of other stuff that is uncovered along the way.

Looking forward to this Gaz - sounds like you intend to do a resto without stripping it to every nut and bolt - be warned that spanner twiddling is infectious, and will likely lead to you dismantling the whole thing

As she came to me.

Dash, heater, bulkhead and vent panel repairs required.



Footwells need sorted out. Welded (Snot) in by PO who obviously had no access to a grinder or file.



Rear door of hardtop needs sprucing up.



Part of the wiring issue to be sorted by the new Autosparks wiring harness.



Engine and engine bay to tidy up.



Zenith carb warped. Now flatted and ready to refit.



Bucket / supportive seats to be fitted for off roading. These will be retained for return to original. May even remove the seatbox for fitment of new seats.



Box of bits in the process of refurb.



My spray booth complete with extract fan and ducting I can lob out the window when in use.



Original badge but non standard colour. Polished and clear coated. I little bit of bling for the old girl. Everyone likes to leave their mark on their LW. Rear badge to be done to match.

Well that's the basic picture set covered.

Now on to the pic's I need you guys help with

I certainly can't live with that come time for some new paint.

Christ knows how I'll get the two panels realigned, must be 1/4" out.

I like the tyres Gaz even though they are military.

Getting anything aligned is always a pain even when the panels are spot on.

Anyone out there with an S2A that could help me spec the dash lights, switches and buttons?

The only reference I have is this pic. Can't remember who I got it from now. It's for an FFR with hand throttle and twin ammeters.

My Choke and 6-way are the only things in the right place.

I'm refitting an IR switch although it will be repurchased for another use. My RHS panel has left and right switch holes above the 6-way.

Anyway, here's the pic of mine for followed by the reference pic from a manual I don't have.






I have put a shout out on a thread from the Scottish Military Vehicles Club on this forum in case someone has an S2A fairly close that could let me have a look at it.

I haven't seen a decal on the 6 way switch like yours before Gaz.

There are quite a lot of variation on dash layout that I have seen including the late 2a Lwts that had the series 3 wing boxes. On the right hand aux panel mine has the IR on the left and wager switch on the right, even though there is the centre vent panel mount for a manual pump to be fitted.

I'm sure someone will have a good idea, including what year the brake test switch started.

Anyone any idea as to the spec/part number of the charging light on an S2A centre dash panel?

Don't think mine is correct.

Your entire dash panel has been swapped at some point - your one is off a 1967 onwards civilian 2a.

The original 2a charging light is rare as hens teeth - I used a series 3 lwt charging light which is a good replacement and is what would've been fitted in service.
