Hi from Yorkshire

Post by leej2706 » Tue Jan 16, 2024 8:54 pm

Hi
I have recently inherited my dad’s vast collection of land rovers, 3 defenders, 1 series 2a, 1 series 1 and a lightweight. I was wanting to find more information on the lightweight, its service history etc.
As a family we don’t have a great connection to the lightweight as he only finished a ground up restoration 4 months before passing away. As such we were considering selling it for someone else to appreciate it. Where would be the best place to get a valuation and selling it?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Hi Lee,

Sorry to hear of your loss.

If you have the vehicles Military registration number, you can trace the vehicles service history from that. The VRN will give an indicator of which branch of the services that the vehicle served in, and therefore who to contact to retrieve it. The RAF and the army ar fairly straightforwards, the RN not so, as they are tight as a ducks arse and re-use their VRN's. But, being that tight at the rear does I suppose, help to keep them watertight and afloat. Post the VRN on here if unsure, and we can hopefully point you in the right direction.

Valuations can be a bit tricky to give unless the vehicle can be seen, and I am far from a pricing expert. Posting up a few general side/front/rear pics of the vehicle, the engine bay, cab interior, and underside will all help. Good condition 'original' untouched vehicles, and well carried out restorations seem to start around the £8k range, with some going for north of £13k. The average price seems to be around the £10/11k range for these vehicles. A rare vehicle, or one with an interesting history, should sell for a bit more. There are auction houses out there that deal in the selling of 'classic' Land Rovers that may give you advice, and there is always ebay, where a look at the completed sales of Lightweights may give you an idea of the price to be asking for yours.

Good luck with the sale of the vehicle when the time comes.
