spliit tailgate halves play
Is this amount of play between the 2 halves normal?
I think it's because the hole for the pin that joins the 2 together is quite larger than the pin. Is that normal?
I guess I could put a sleeve on the pin of some type to help.
Re: spliit tailgate halves play
There is a bit of play in the upper and lower tailgates relative to each other due to the top pins being 5/16" diameter, and the locating holes they go into being 1/2". There's also a bit of inbuilt slack in the bottom pins & holes. The inbuilt 'floating alignment' does make it easier to shut bent tailgates, so it isn't all bad. It also gives you that lovely rattle going over rough ground.

Re: spliit tailgate halves play
Thanks, yes that seems sensible.
My tailgate also had chequer plate riveted across the inside so it was all held together tightly. Removed it and yep, one more rattle to deal with.
I have not driven the landy for a while and have forgotten that the tolerances on military's vehicles from the 70s are of course quite loose.
