new alternator for 12V recommendations

Post by daugs » Tue Aug 02, 2022 6:35 pm

so the saga continues after two years of lack of use.......after pressing landy into use on Saturday as rail strike left little alternative to get to a family event, and the middle seat installed so we could all make it. Anyway on way home developed horrible rattle from front of engine, and turns out the bearings on the alternator have had it, or at least a nasty wobble on the spindle when turned by hand after removing from engine.

Pic of alternator removed, as only has a single pulley I'm guessing replaced at sometime long ago, but looks like right type. The double pulley is one I picked up ages ago somewhere which would be nice to use and have the double fan belt for redundancy, but not essential. The old alternator would be hard to fix given the tools I have on hand at the moment and general hassle so I'm thinking of just getting a new one.

If I understand the original was the Lucas ACR16 as it was on lots of 1970s things, so easy to replace but many people have units with higher outputs. ACR17/18? Presume no wiring issues ?

Can anyone recommend a good replacement and source ? Do they all come with the key even if don't come with a pulley. I'm not optimistic at getting the old one off unscathed. The ususal suspects all seem around £50-£60 for aftermarket replacement for std series 3.

All insights gratefully received.
