Military Lightweight Forum

Hi All,

i'm Steve; and have just purchased my first Lightweight project. I've owned a military series 3 in the past - and wish I hadnt sold it for £750!

Anyways, no, I dont have a picture of mine for you today; but will have shortly, along with a thousand questions.

I hope I'm not upsetting too many people when I say mine has a Disco 1 diesel conversion.

When I bought it, I thought I just needed to sort out a "loom" for the start / stop cicruit on the engine. Turns out that is already sorted - but it requires complete wiring for the rest of it.

There will be many questions coming about making looms or buying them, switches and so on.

Its had extensive and very good work up to now including full galv chassis, bulkhead, crossmember and bumpers, all new disco diffs, all new brakes, doors, tailgate, lights.

It runs and drives - with a piece of baling twine as a throttle.

I look forward to much head scratching and hopefully some solutions.

Answers will need to be written slowly, so I can understand them. Cheers!

We're in Norfolk, but mine last served at Waterbeach in Cambs, so your neck of the woods.

Do you have your mil history?

I might have driven it at Waterbeach! I've borrowed one or two from there.

No Service History for mine yet but it has the Service Reg plate inside the door. Its currently on the dreaded Q plate but I think I have all the stuff to get it sorted. I think it will be an M reg.

Waterbeach is 15 minutes from me, but less a 30 second walk from my old office. I was an officer in Cambs ACF and my HQ is on the airfield.

Hi Steve, welcome to the forum! I'm also not far from you, near Haverhill. Good luck with your project and you are by no means the only one with a Tdi conversion on here so don't worry about that.

Welcome to the forum from someone else just down the road, I hope you enjoy your time on here. I spent a few, enjoyable, years of my career based in Waterbeach, long after the Lightweights had left service mind you. (The last in service one I saw was in Norway in the mid 90's.). It was a shame when they closed the barracks. Especially for those in 39 Engineers who had to make the move up to the wilds of Scotland.

Feel free to ask any questions you like, there are some knowledgeable and helpful people on here.

I look forwards to seeing a pic or two of your motor in due course.

I hope I just added a picture. At the moment the rush will be on to get rid of its Q plate. Don't know when it got it, but I understand you only have 12 months and then it stays. I would have preferred to have it tax and mot exempt on what I believe is an M plate. Its been rejected once already.
