1971 build Series 2a Lightweight

It has a 200Tdi engine with intercooler and Kenlow fan, Exmoor hood with roll up sides, Fairey free wheel hubs, Defender door mirrors, all the fly screens, High back PVC seats, folding rear bench seats, LWB brakes with servo, high ratio Range Rover type 3.5 diffs, pro comp shock absorbers, military split rim wheels, 2 piece tail gate, original tool box (these are often lost), both fuel tanks although only one is piped in. Brand new G90 tyres. Restored and in very good condition. Bulkhead and chassis in great condition. Loads more photos available. Price £18k ono

This is a reluctant sale and only happening as family member needs power steering for comfortable use and although this vehicle has been modified, power steering is perhaps a step too far. The engine conversion has been done well and a revert to original engine is straightforward. I can supply a quote for this privately.

Morning, shame you are having to sell the lightweight. Can you confirm you are a private seller and not a trader? Is the vehicle registered in your name on the V5?

I know it is a pity, especially as it is such a good one and rare 2a. If I cannot get my price, I am considering putting electric power steering on it which cuts out at 10 mph. This might solve my wife's inability to move the steering wheel at slow speeds when parking. But it is simpler to sell and swap for a Wolf!

Having a 200tdi in it why don't you look at running power steering off the engine with the original pump?

For the moment, I have decided to withdraw the 2a from sale (I have only shown it on this forum anyway). Although it is restored and had some tasteful and useful modifications, I don't think I'd find another one easily...so I am going to work on the wife's bicep power. She has agreed to give it another try, so let's see. The campaign begins. If it's back for sale, you know I have had to surrender.

Fit the original steering wheel back on it - they were large diameter for a reason, to provide more leverage.

Also take the top off the steering relay and fill it with oil and make a tool to press the upper bushing down slightly to allow oil to lubricate it’s running surface.

Thanks for that suggestion. Really good idea. I will set to it. I never liked the steering wheel on this one anyway with its strange sports car spokes.

It is a (nicely) restored and slightly unoriginal vehicle (mainly engine), so this alteration is worthwhile. Somewhere else on the forum, I have been told this might have been a prototype for the series 3 LW as the steering column in series 3 vintage.. I then got a heritage cert and found it was a 1971 built series 2a which makes it one of the very last in the line, so this anecdote is possible. Of course, it could just be a mod by a previous owner, but unfortunately the history file has a gap in its post military use. Anyway, going to research to try and verify, and also follow your suggestions, but to do this correctly, as its a late Series 2a, I think the steering wheel was an early Series 3 rather than an early series 2a?

I have bumped this topic as the car is back for sale. No chance of convincing the wife now she has seen a Wolf she wants
