military engine numbers

Post by BOMBER71 » Sat Feb 27, 2016 7:40 pm

My 2a lightweight has engine number 23600894A which is probably the original . However my 1982 series 3 has engine number S23600241A ! I know the S denotes that it a replacement engine but I would be surprised that they still had early early 3 MB engines in the 1980/90s . I presume the correct engine number for a 1982 series 3 would be a 951 number and 5 MB . Both engine blocks are stamped 541874 . Is there any easy way to tell the difference externally between a 3 and 5 MB engine ? Regards Martin

5mb engines are generally red (unless painted by someone) and will have strengthening ribs cast into the block visible on the outside in a diagonal style.

Hi Martin,

I would have expected your SIII to have a 951 prefix engine, not an early numbered SIIA lump. Find yourself a 951 lump and rip out the 236, I'm sure a few people on here wouldn't mind it if you did offer it up.

A 3 MB engine has smooth sides to the block whereas the 5 MB block has strengthening ribs cast in it. IIRC there's a near vertical row of four or five of them above the sump to about the height of the dipstick hole top and then some thicker ribs above these to the height of the engine mounting.
