XZLs are great tyres. Just watch the date codes. Quite a few old stock ones on the market at the moment and you don't really want anything older than 6-8 months old to start with.

I've got XZL's on my lightweight, seem to handle well on road.

Last leave I was doing 35mph downhill with a car in front (not really obeying my distance etc. ) when they cut out completely and came to a grinding halt with no brake lights!

Luckily I was mildly paying attention and noticed so I jammed my foot on the brake and came to an abrupt stop with only a bit of sliding at the very end. A good test of tyres/brakes/my reaction time.

Hello everyone,

I have ZXLs in 750x16 on my LWT, mounted in tubeless and inflated to 2.5kg.
Braking and intersections roundabouts = no vicious reactions on wet or wet but I ride quietly...

I'm about to press the button on a set of deestone extra traction, then it's just a case of finding time to fit them. They seem to get a better review than the security version.

I think I prefer the look of the Deestone over the Security. I haven't driven around on either, so don't have any comparative experience to base a decision on.

From what I have read the security version can feel lumpy and more unpredictable. However you never know how much experience a person has with old land rovers or off road tyres. But the Deestone's seem to be better liked.

Confirming that 235/75R16 tyres are generally used on the later series 3 Lightweight and that the speedometer works okay with this size?

If I can only get a 235/85R16, is that going to make a huge difference?

Hi Alex,

The 235/85 R16 is about the closest to a 7.50" tyre in overall size comparision, but they do vary slightly between manufacturers.

To determine what tyres your vehicle was originally on, have a look on the speedo below the three warning lights where you will see some white lettering. (MADE IN UK, a serial number starting SNT-####/## and four numerals.) It is the four numerals you are interested in, if they read 1536 it is for 6.00" tyres, 1504 is for 6.50" tyres, and 1408 is for 7.50" tyres. You would need the 1408 marked speedo from a 109" or an 88" factory fitted with 7.50's to be anywhere near accurate on 235's. Both my Lightweights had the 1536 marked speedo fitted when I purchased them, and I believe this is the original speedo fitted to all.
