Hello again AR4412,
Many thanks for the offer of a reference measurement, I would really welcome that.
I am not sure of the best way to do it, however as the main instrument panel seems a good fit on mine, maybe vertical and horizontal dimentions from the one of the two instrument panel lower mounting screw positions would be a good start. I think I would only need the references of the centres of the correct heater inlet and outlet pipe holes from that point, the lower fan box lower mounting screw holes would follow from this and the existing instrument panel holes.
I am not too worried about the hole for the wiring (and guess this would be a bit of a faff for you to measure with a fitted heater box!).
If you are willing to do this or if you have a better suggestion, it would be a great step forward for me, thank you!

My bulkhead is stood on it's side in the corner of the garage so getting to it to do some measuring isn't a problem. I will try to get some relevant measurements for you tomorrow afternoon if life doesn't get in the way of the plan.

Hello AR4412,
I would welcome your offer of some references from your bulkhead, many thanks.

My latest plan is to take my reference for the fan case fitting from the two instrument panel lower screw-holes, fit the angle piece (when it arrives from Blanchards) onto the top of the fan box and the positions of the holes for the heater pipes and lower fixing holes should follow from there.

It would be a great help if you were able to give me the positions of the centres of the two holes the heater pipes go through. If you could reference their position vertically and horizontally from one of the two instrument panel lower screw-hole centres that would be great. Once I have drilled them and the heater is placed in position, I will just use the lower mountings to mark and drill their holes.

By the way, are the fan-box lower fixings fitted by self-tappers that go into plastic screw inserts like the instrument panel ones?

Many thanks

These measurements in this pic are for the wiring grommet hole, which is a 19mm hole.
Heater Holes 1.JPG
Heater Holes 1.JPG (28.86 KiB) Viewed 1414 times
The distance of the red vertical line from hole centre to the bottom edge of the binnacle hole is 80mm
The distance of the red horizontal line from hole centre to the left edge of the firewall panel is 143mm
The distance of the just visible blue vertical line from hole centre to left dash screw hole centre is 67mm
The distance of the blue right diagonal line to the right dash screw hole centre is 143mm

I didn't show measurements to the right of the firewall panel as the hole placing isn't I feel, that critical. But, should be 357mm.

Also circled in yellow are the two rivnuts used to secure the bottom of the heater to the bulkhead.

These measurements are for the left hand heater pipe hole, again a 19mm hole.

The distance of the left blue diagonal line from hole centre to left dash screw hole centre is 130mm

These measurements are for the right hand heater pipe hole, again a 19mm hole. It's hole centre is 52mm from the left hole's centre.
Heater Holes 3.JPG
Heater Holes 3.JPG (29.07 KiB) Viewed 1414 times
The distance of the red vertical line from hole centre to the bottom edge of the binnacle hole is 38mm
The distance of the red horizontal line from hole centre to the left edge of the firewall panel is 328mm, to the right edge it is 172mm
The distance of the blue vertical line from hole centre to left dash screw hole centre is 183mm
The distance of the blue right diagonal line to the right dash screw hole centre is 35mm

I hope these measurements help, and if they're not there and you require the measurements for the lower heater mounting holes , let me know and I can measure them for you. But, as a 1975 vehicle the rivnuts should be there in your bulkhead unless removed for some reason, like a snapped bolt, or rip out on undoing a bolt.

Many Thanks!

Those measurements are superb, it will be so straightforward for me to mark out and drill those holes. By the way, what are the other much smaller holes for? The one near the centre and the pair off towards the right?

I have no rivnuts for the lower mount holes on mine , the repair to the rear face to the bulkhead was done as a full piece of sheet from the binnacle hole right down to the transmission tunnel, so these were lost. The lower mounts (ie the studs that should be on the top of the heater box) are only secured on the left hand side by a nut and bolt through a hole drilled by the fitter and the right hand side is just hanging there with no hole at all!

Interestingly, the mounts that are fitted to the studs are not slotted fixings that I thought were cut from another scrapped heater box, but appear to be proper manufactured items. I wonder if these were originally intended to go on the top studs when the 'box was the right way up and secured under the binnacle as an alternative to the long angle strip. I could see that working, as they will line up correctly, although it would add the problem of small items slipping down between the 'Box and firewall, something the angle strip would prevent. Maybe they were the original design before the angle strip superceeded them. Possibly someone will know about this?

Once again, many thanks, I look forward to the job now and will post up some pics of my progress. However that will have to wait for a bit, as guess whose P38 Rangie's starter motor just died yesterday! More expence and time required...

At least it's only a starter motor. It could be worse and flashing engine immobilized/ keycode lockout on the dash, and not responding to a re-synch or eka entry. (Got three doing that in our carpark at work.)

I don't remember anything being in the small central hole, but would have to check the rebuild pics to be sure. The pair of holes on the right are for the starter solenoid mounting bolts.

I will measure the bottom mounting holes for you when I next get the chance.

I guess "only" the starter motor on the P38 is a sort of blessing, the electronic probs I have had over the years have been much more "interesting"! When the "super lock" mode that the designers chose to install failed, it required removing the rear door and hacksawing through the driver's door latch staple to get it open! (followed by removing all the superlock wiring to avoid it happening again...)

Thanks for the info on the other holes on your bulkhead. The two for the starter solenoid are not there on mine, I wonder where they put it!!! (on present experience, it's probably in the rear wheel-arch toolbox!) I'll have a look tomorrow.

Thanks for the offer of measuring the lower mounts positions for me, but please don't worry. My plan is to temporarily hang the fan box in it's proper place on the upper screws and mark, then drill, the lower holes. I am happy to secure it in place on 2 nuts and bolts rather than rivnuts.

Thanks again

I remembered what the small central hole is for in the bulkhead panel earlier, but have only just had chance to post. It's to secure the P-clip that holds the positive lead from the battery to the starter solenoid.
