Tailgate referb
Tailgate referb
Gordon used his expert beady eye to find me a split tailgate at Gaydon. I didn't see it but somehow he did.
I have already started the work and my mate Steve has helped bash everything with a lump hammer and made it fit roughly square. One casualty of this is my numberplate light which couldn't stand the shock of us squaring up the tub ends to meet the tailgate it just flew off accross the road, nothing some superglue won't fix!

Re: Tailgate referb
I have taken most of the mountings off for de-rusting and paint stripping.
The pick head mount has seen better days. I'm soaking it in a home made anti rust soloution to see if the bolt and spacer can be saved but the bracket will need to be fabricated I think.
We have fabricated a couple of mising peices to sandwich the straps and I'm trying to clean up the mounts so that they are serviceable.
We have neen playing forensic archeologists and looking at the layers of paint, we can see the orginal Deep Bronze Green has been covered with a layer of Olive Drab then a layer of Green/Black Camo, then a layer of Olive Drab, then a layer of Gloss Green and a final super thick layer of NATO Green. I love seeing the history appearing.

Re: Tailgate referb
After a liberal application or thirteen of Nitromors and lots of scraping I have got it back to bare metal and applied the first layer of primer, going to need some P38 to build up the dents and smooth things out next.

Cola + Vinager + Alka Selza = fizz
After 30 mins I added some sulphuric based limescale remover to raise the PH a tad more. I'll post up a picture of how the parts are looking when I get a chance.

Re: Tailgate referb
This is how the Tailgate is looking now, my friend Steve has worked magic with the filler and spray can and I have sanded my hands away. I think it was worth it.
Now I just need some nato green...

Re: Tailgate referb
It's looking good now Cam, well worth the effort. You wouldn't believe it was the same tailgate
