Series IIA Chassis up rebuild

I am going to try putting a 10m air hose between compressor and water trap to aid cooling the air, as well as fitting a new fangled air drier that I have just bought on ebay. I may also route the air hose through a bucket of water. Now, any advice on how to stop it raining so I can try this out ?

Tried sand blasting again this weekend. 10m pipe between compressor and first water trap, with the pipe coiled in a bucket of cold water. 2nd 10m pipe between that and water trap on the pot. Success! I sand blasted for 3 hours and the metering valve didn't get blocked once, also the water traps actually caught water - the water in the bucket even warmed up!

Sand blasting was still very slow and after 2 hours I thought I had finished having completed the small items below. Given rate of progress I had also made my mind up to redouble my efforts to find someone with a proper sand blaster to do the bigger items.

I went in for a snack and a drink, when I returned I found all the other small bits in the garage that i had forgotten so went outside to start again. The blaster behaved very strangely, expelling lots of grit at very low pressure...after 10 seconds it returned to normal, except it was higher pressure and much much faster...it seems that like Sidders the output pipe had been blocked as well, so I might try the bigger items myself now. In the last hour I sand blasted more than I had done in the first two hours. Only problem is that the smell of burning rubber from the compressor has turned into a disintegrating belt, hopefully the new one will turn up early this week.

I’ve still not been out to the garage - it’s becoming a mental block. Must book the ally welder man to get things moving again.

I haven't been out for the last couple of days - a new belt arrived for the compressor today and I haven't been out to fit that either. I did build one of the door tops over the weekend but haven't posted a picture of that yet.

Work has been busy, so slow progress...

I fitted the new belt to the compressor today, the offset between the wheels was 1cm when it was supposed to be 4mm...all bolts tight so it must have come from the factory like this. Now runs quieter than the day it arrived!

Have built both door tops, visibly chipped the paint on one by dropping the old one on top of it!

Spent another few hours sand blasting.

The blasted parts have come up a treat. I ended up using a scrapping and metal pan cleaner which took ages and the results are not as good.

It still a little slow as the pot is slow and I haven't taken all the galvanising off, that is why they are a bit mottled - expecting the pickling and regalvanising to sort this

I ended up buying a "high flow" kit for my compressor which effectively replaced the 8mm home with a 14mm main hose and a 10mm hose, sand blasting is now an altogether different experience - it wasn't the pressure or moisture, it was the low flow rate causing problems. Also welded up a few holes in the front bumperettes. Off to the galvanisers early next week.

I should also add if I had known what I was doing with the sand blaster I could probably have saved alot of parts from needing regalvanising (obviously not the rusty ones or my "cut and shut" windscreen) - the last part I blasted was a radio cage and I did this carefully so as to only remove the paint which seems to have worked well. Will add a photo in the daylight.

The parts for galvanising were collected a week ago. The company rang me up the next day to say they didn't do car parts any more as they were too fiddly. Luckily they had already picked them up and I had wired the smaller parts together - they agreed to do them if they could do them over 2 weeks.

I have really only been tinkering since, but pulled my finger out today. I fitted the sills and test fitted the seat box and floors so that I could drill holes in the seat box before painting. I also made some nut retainers for the seat panel ends - please don't judge the welding too harshly as it was difficult to get the torch in the right place!
