GS Clansman fit out

Hi,
Leading on from my other questions...
I am at the stage to start sorting the back out.
I have the following, and am making the following assumptions / desisions based on previous answers.

Tuam box and mount plate etc on drivers side wing and clansman frame mounted to drivers side of dexion. - Does it just bolt through? is there a correct dimensional layout for this kit?

I know I have the incorrect Dexion, I will sort this when I can find some of the good stuff, but I am mistified about the location of the cable runs? should I also add one of those Tuamm Wire boxes to the top of the wing too?? what other electrical units should I have fitted? (Ive seen some pictures, but am nieve to the part codes needed.)

Im guessing there should be a hole in the bottom of the box for cable entry / exit?

Did they have a headset / mic for the driver / passenger or use the separate speaker, I have seen mounted to the frame? Is there an interface box in the cab to facilitate this connection?

I am trying to replicate a fairly simple clansman but not complete FFR setup. I have seen several - that you think really - "all that kit???" sureley not (well I do!!) - I dont like over dressed up... just realistic in service

Hi here is some information that might help you.
There are two types of cable storage wing boxes and later ones had a flap cut into the wing with a under mounted cable storage box.
There are also two types of cable to connect them a spiral plastic covered one and a metal braided one I think both need to be used with the correct storage boxes and route differently to connect to them.
sure some one has a much better information and will be along to advise but here,s a start.

I'm going to stick my neck out. Are we all really sure that GS Land Rovers which carried manpack radios were fitted with wing-mounted ATUs or TUAAMs? I didn't think they were.

I'm sorry to pea on your bonfire as well, but I have in front of me EMER WHEELED VEHICLES Q 027/13 Mod Instr No.11 Preparation of vehicle to accept man pack radios applicable to 1620-0778 & 1620-5778. These are S3 LtWts (not FFR).

"This instruction details the drilling of one hole 12mm diam in the rear LH wheel arch to allow connection to the vehicle chassis harness of the man pack radio distribution box."

That's all I'm afraid.

Ah right, I was under the impression, the single tuaam ones were gs manpack, and the double true FFR, you learn something new everyday... where would you attach the aerial to the outside of the vehicle if the wings weren’t used in that mode, or is it just bent up under the canvas?

Were tuaam boxes ever retro fitted to 12v or was it a total no-no...?

Unfortunately never been in the services or had any contact with the vehicles, I can only be guided by the knowledge of others.

I think it unlikely, as the servos & electronics may be based on a 24v system derived from the radio itself. I think that a man pack radio would not have provision to provide the DC & switching arrangements for a TUAAM that was designed to receive all this from a purpose built vehicle radio installation.

However lots of people bolt on all sorts of things to their vehicles either because they don't know any better or don't particularly care, as very few of the public would know any different about the authenticity of such embellishments. It all depends on whether an individual owner wants to feel confident in themselves that they are displaying something reasonably authentic or not.

Out of a matter of interest, what radio gear did a GS contain then, or were they totally devoid of all Comms?

I’m a radio engineer in the TV game - it’s all servers now.. so think I am going to look into the “what’s powered at what voltage” and where in the vehicle when it’s got the manpack rather than the separate radios ring & table in the ffr.

There may be some scope there?

Did they ever fit the RACAL 349 and 350 stuff to lightweights as it was 12v power, or was that for something else?

GS vehicles were fitted with TUAAM, the power supply for which is from the 24v radio battery (charged from the 14v DCCU) and via the Initiate box, see AC61590, Part 7, supplement 4, 2nd Edition February 1989 (Superseding edition dated June 1977) User Handbook For CLANSMAN RADIO INSTALLATIONS in TRUCKS, 1/2 and 3/4 ton, TUL and TUM, FFR and GS, ROVER.

As for the parts, it's all still available but you need to seek and enjoy what you find.

The prc351 is indeed designed to power the tuaam via the initiate box through one of the 7pin headset sockets .The tuaam is 24v but is powered from the manpack 351 which is run from the 24v rechargeable battery pack .This is charged via the dccu which there is a 12volt version for a 12v gs.
