Hello Bob Fell,

I am on the same type of work: Smiths 24v heater rebuild.

I have 3 questions to avoid doing silly things:

1) How to disassemble the fan of the motor shaft? I already remove the hexacave headless screw (BTR screw) in the center of the fan.

2) How to deoxidize without risk the kind of resistance in this photo

3) White + Green + Brown are not the colors of electrical wire that I see on the electrical diagram of the FFR 24V (NO + GN + GY)

Answer me please as if you were speaking with a child of 5 years (the French are better in red wine than in technical English  )

Thanks in advance.

I had the same problem trying to remove the Fan hub from my heater motor. Unfortunately I tried to use too much heat and it melted the hub material. It still did not come apart, so I resorted to cutting the fan off to save the motor and bought a replacement fan from a LR show for £10

Hello,

1. The problem with the fan lies with the retaining screw which burrs the motor shaft making it difficult to shift until past the burr. You need to apply gentle heat and a few sharp taps with a mallet.

2. Remove the resistor so it does not get damaged by drilling off the 2 rivets

3. The wiring diagram refers only to the vehicle wiring not the sub assembly which in this case is the heater. The heater wiring is civilian because this heater in both 12 and 24 volt guises was fitted to many British cars of the era. It was 'militarized' by a 5 bladed fan and suppression unit when fitted to FFR's, outside of that it was standard civvy spec.

Re paint.

I use Aldi rattle can gloss black (£2.99 a can). It's made in Germany and an enamel paint. Use light coats to increase the hardness. They also sell a dark green enamel which is similar to Bronze green. I'm planning to use it on bodywork out of general view but requiring protection ie, under body tub, lower floor pans etc. Aldi have it under their special buys and it generally comes out on sale every 4 months ? Hope that helps. Rgds Mark

Hello, great rebuild of your heater!
Mine is missing the springs from the doors. I have found a place on line that's got thousands of torsion springs, but a basic sketch of the right one so I can pick something out. Would you be so kind as to give me some ideas as to leg length, angle etc. That would be great.
Cheers
