Re: Smiths 24v heater rebuild
Having had a couple of hours to myself today, I have completed the refurb of the heater motor, so here's some pics.....
First of all here's the constituent parts ready to assemble, the motor casing is a very nice gloss which I found to be the closest match in sheen to the original paint inside the casing. It's Hycote and inexpensive. The smudges on the casing are waxoyl around the vulnerable areas.
Next was to blow off the commutator and magnet body with the airbrush. This is to ensure there are no nasty little bits of sanding dust floating around and crap from cleaning out the commutator plate grooves.
Further prep work was to very lightly oil the commutator spindle and fit the shims for the end float to the winding end of the commutator only, you'll see why later.
The number of shims will vary from motor to motor, what I took off has gone back whence it came from.
Also the brass bushes in both casings need to be very lightly oiled - they float so this is required to ensure they move with the shaft as it rotates.
The system won't allow me to load anymore pics now so will continue on another post.

Re: Smiths 24v heater rebuild
Next one...
This where you can damage you lovely paintwork - make sure everything will thread through the hole in the outer casing, I had to gently file off some solder on the terminal ends.
Make sure the magnet body is bottomed down in the casing and the screened wiring is in the right position, you'll know from the kink in it and where it is flattened out as it goes down the side of the magnet casing and through the casing hole.
Next is the difficult bit - pulling the magnet body aside, insert the short end of the spindle that you have put shims on earlier into the bush of the outer casing, it should be a gentle fit, not too tight, not too easy - (anything else and you have a problem), then ease the brush plate over the long end of the spindle. Having done this, make sure the bush springs and bushes are properly located and pull them back in their housings whilst easing the bush plate down over the commutator, once done push the bush plate down so it doesn't spring back up over the commutator and spoil all your hard work in having to do it all again.
You will end up with this...
Now do a continuity check, (bearing in mind you have already checked the commutator earlier after cleaning the plates up) you cannot do enough at this stage of assembly just to make sure, it'll save a lot of F's if you get it all back together and it don't work
Going to have to go now or will be in trouble, will finish tomorrow.

Re: Smiths 24v heater rebuild
Some more,
Fit the retaining screws and bush plate spacers, connect the screening terminal, flat washers and springs - I've fitted the nuts to hold it all together - lightly oil the spindle shaft and fit the shims
Remove the nuts if fitted and fit the paper gasket
Fit the inner casing, the shake proof washers and nuts, tighten down to firm finger tight, spin the spindle, it should nicely free run for a few turns as your fingers come free. Test it again just to make sure

Re: Smiths 24v heater rebuild
Fit the mounting bushes (but not their sleeves as they may fall out), a final polish....job done
Finally the decal, for which was the reason I bought the heater in the first place, will be gently cleaned and applied later with thin gauge hi-tac double sided tape
I do have some copies of the decal on order
Casing to follow shortly
Regards
Bob

To finish the heater motor off, here is the new decal fitted kindly faithfully reproduced and supplied by Colin Voss, no doubt soon to be available for purchase via his website (no gain or interest whatsoever on my part).
It sets it off a treat

Hiya Bob!
,
Nice looking motor there mate, and good to know that the sticker for the 24 volter should soon be available.
(Says he who doesn't need a sticker for his as he carefully preserved and worked around the original when he found that he couldn't get a replacement.)
