Mounting the pioneer tools on the tailgate
I have been given a pioneer shovel, pick axe handle and pick axe to mount on the tailgate, but I do not know how they are supposed to be mounted. I have a new upper and lower tailgate which has fitted some canvas straps only.
There are several holes in the tailgate (one being square) is there supposed to be mounting inserts or hardware which I need to buy. Any photos would be welcome.

This is the only photo I have of a talegate with the brackets fitted

There should also be some J shaped supports fitted under each canvas strips

Thanks Tin Weasel I'm more baffled as your lower tailgate has no holes in it.Tinweasel wrote:This is the only photo I have of a talegate with the brackets fitted

Re: Mounting the pioneer tools on the tailgate
Your lower tail gate section would have been off a 2A or early series 3 this is were the number plate and light would have been fitted later series 3 as yours is have the number plate and light mounted top left hand corner.
You are missing the support brackets for the pick axe handle and for the shovel.

Re: Mounting the pioneer tools on the tailgate
The holes are a left over from early lightweights which had the number plate on a hinge fitted to the tailgate, the hole bottom left is for a cable which comes between the chassis and the tub where there would be a waterproof connecter to alow the tailgate to be removed, it go's into the tailgate there and comes out of the other round hole the square hole is for a clip to hold the number plate down

If you had to drive with the tailgate down the number plate would be alowed to hang down so it could still be seen, yours wouldnt have had this and the holes were covered with a gromet and a Land Rover badge, I was once told there are 3 different tailgates, the early ones had a hinge, the net ones didnt but still had the hole's and the last ones were plain without the holes or the hinge but to be honest I have never looked hard enough to find out if thats right or not

Careful, that's a 109" and they don't have split tailgates.
