Yep, they're trousers, combat, windproof. They came "into fashion" following the Falklands campaign. They were issued to 3 Cdo Bde and 5 Abn Bde and were the trousers which took the Paras out of denims. Prior to the Falklands, DPM trousers were "for hats" - Paras wore denims (or lightweights at a push). After the Falklands, denims disappeared over night as it was a mark of Falklands service that you had been issued with a pair of the DPM windproof combat trousers. They were also popular with the SAS who had the matching smock (also issued during the Falklands, though the non-SAS one had tabs for rank slides. The cross-over belts were a strange carry-over from the old OG trousers (and KD trousers before them. They were actually very comfortable to wear giving good adjustment. So, I would say you have yourself a nice purchase there.

Ah! You've pushed me beyond my knowledge envelope - you need Shaun.

I'm not aware of any particular change in design as they weren't a mainstream item. They were always an "A team" issue - RM Cdo, SF, Paras AMF(L) - basically those units which were posted to, or exercised in, cold climates - but that didn't include Bosnia - even in winter!

The camouflage colours were always dark on the windproof fabric. I have two cold-weather caps - one, early pattern with green fake fur which is really uncomfortably itchy once you warm up and a much more recent one with the black cloth lining and both have identical DPM windproof cloth despite there being at least 15 years between them.

Am I correct in my recollection that these had split trouser leg bottoms with Velcro, to enable them to be pulled off easily without removing one's boots?

Fred...no Velcro present but I do fear these have been altered for the shorter legged infantryman such as myself..needless to say I am very happy with the fit , and match perfectly with my newly aquired early dpm para smock..and hood....nice to have a matching set...I shall cherish these pantaloons and your invaluable military knowledge...I salute you.!
TW...I also need your unequivable input into these leg huggers.

Not much I can add to what's already been said really. First came in to the RM in the 70's but I'm not sure the exact year, i don't have a pair of these, think I may still have a pair of the next type, basically the same but without the belt. I got then when they were plentiful and wore them almost exclusively for any outdoor activitie, shooting, walking, gardening, trips to the local, I basically lived in them as they were so comfortable. Not however the most hardwareing of items and sadly they can be a little hard to find these days.

Nice find

Hiya Sidders! :D

As I'm arctic warfare trained, but only have the later kit, I feel it is only right that you donate those trousers to my collection. Nice find mate.

A mistake in what I wrote above. It should be 5 Inf Bde, not 5 Abn Bde. (The bns of 5 Inf Bde were 2SG, 1WG and 7GR - 2 and 3 Para were, of course, att 3 Cdo Bde with 40, 42 and 45 Cdo RM)
