I have been looking for one of these for years, but only ever found broken or incomplete examples, so I pleased to have found this, the other half is probably less impressed....

We had a box of these, I think the L60a variant, in the ammo store at Besbrook Mill in South Armagh. Being the only permanent subaltern in the concrete hotel meant that 'duty officer' and hence armoury checks came around rather often. I wonder if anyone there had been trained in how to use them, I certainly hadn't. I thought the armoury sergeant was pulling my plonker when he told me that it collected a live round as it launched. Winding up subalterns was an established hobby of the Sergeants' mess so I was permanently suspicious. I can't imagine what a live fire training exercise would look like with these things, the drop shorts were bad enough with the 51mm mortar. I guess they could be fun in the direct fire role though.
Hugo.
