Well, there you go, I've saved you some money! Rover 1 - split pin. Series 3, split pin, possibly R clip at some time during 1980s. "Nappy Pin" probably only after leaving service, unless, for some reason, a towing hitch was replaced with a new one towards the end of its service.

Well guys,
For want of any further info maybe, maybe not. I cannot remember what was on my 2A and the pics I can find don't show.
The link you posted to a site I'm well aware of shows a retaining chain that was not military vehicle spec to my knowledge.
The Sankey NT book Dec '70 lists R clip FV308524 for retaining the pivot lock pin FV322177 (assembly FV337708). confusing? yes but if they used an R clip for that then surely one for the latch hook?
Ah well, I guess we'll never know for sure but I only remember R and 'Nappy Pins'.

Bob

Update..
Claudio's book page 128 shows VPK 08GX72 with what appears to be split pin, I cannot find any evidence of an R clip in the pic.
Well there you go.

The best available, Bob! Someone after your crown? Don't think they had "original jockey wheels" on ES registerd NTs and the duckboard isn't to spec...

Fred
Hi Fred,
You're not wrong, nor did they have an upside down, red painted WT rear towing hitch but never mind, he's not to know.
It's pretty tidy though by the pics but close up, you never know until you look at it in the 'flesh' so to speak.
Regards
Bob
Got to eat humble on this, the tow hitch is the right way up  but wrong for NT.

I have tried scanning all my Land Rover books and, while I can find no evidence of "R" clips, nor can I say, categorically, that the pictures show split pins. Usually, the tow hitch is in shadow, so it's impossible to see - and, in several cases of NI photos which are bright enough, the back-seat passengers have their feet on the top of the tow hook! I do remember the small "R" clip for the anti-turn lock, but I can't remember from what period - probably on my 109 GSs of the middle 80s. The main reason I can remember the split pins is the fact that they were all too easy to catch your leg on and either tear your trousers or cut your leg - or both! Have a scan of the photos in Mark Cook's book - there are plenty in there showing rear views, but my eyes can't pick the detail out - but where there is a photo of a Ninety with an "R" clip, it is quite apparent as the loop shows up well.

Fred
